Back in the 1970’s, an idiotic law was passed by congress called the “Indian Child Welfare Act”. It’s not so much that having a law to preserve the Indian way of life is stupid, it’s the degree to which it goes, here is proof of that point.
Little Lexi Page is just 1 1/2 % Choctaw Indian who had been living with a white family, five out of the six years of her life. Summer and Rusty Page are the only mother and father she has ever known. Now the Pages, who live in Santa Clara, California are waiting for the Indians to come take her away. The Pages have been fighting for two years to adopt Lexi and there was a stay in place, which was lifted after the adoption failed due to the “Indian Child Welfare Act.”
Does it make sense to take a child away from loving parents just because she is 1 1/2% Choctaw? What about her other 98.5% that’s white? Does that not count for anything? And how is Lexi benefiting by being ripped out from the only home and parents she has ever known and sent to live with strangers? This very act could traumatize her forever, just imagine what this must be like for her, but that’s not even the most outrageous part of this rotten mess.
The Choctaws have gone through years of litigation to get custody of Lexi and you probably would think they will take this child back to the reservation with them. That would be the logical thought process, however, you are wrong. They are shipping her off to Utah to live with a family of non-blood and non-Indian family. The young girl won’t even be in the same state as the Choctaw tribe who live in Oklahoma.
Besides her parents, Lexi has three siblings that I sure she will miss and those three siblings may find it hard to accept that she is gone and they will never see her again.
This is one law that must change.
