The Philadelphia Inquirer recently discovered a video of Lincoln University president Robert Jennings telling an auditorium of students that there are women who complain about rape when sex “didn’t turn out the way they wanted it to turn out.” Jennings was talking about how rape accusations can tarnish a young man’s life, and warned male students not to put themselves in such situations in the first place, but Jennings has still come under fire for comments characterized as insensitive to rape claims.

Jennings talked about respect between men and women when he referred to three cases of women on campus who, “after having done whatever they did with the young men, and then it didn’t turn out the way they wanted it to turn out,” they called Public Safety and cried rape.

Minutes later, Jennings did tell the young men, “Don’t put yourself in a situation that would cause you to be trying to explain something that really needs no explanation had you not put yourself in that situation.”

Jennings’ comments got a lot of online attention this week, and after days of criticism, he issued an apologetic statement:

“My message was intended to emphasize personal responsibility and mutual respect. I apologize for my choice of words. I certainly did not intend to hurt or offend anyone.”
