Domestic Dispute Ends With Father Shooting Son After Son Tried To Set Himself On Fire

A South Carolina man has been taken to the hospital after attempting to set himself on fire, then getting shot by his father who was trying to prevent him from starting the fire.

According to Fox Carolina,

Richland County deputies say they plan to charge a 31-year old man with attempted arson after a disturbance early Tuesday morning that ended with gunfire.

According to deputies, Felton Wayne Swindler tried to set fire to himself and a home at 9115 Wilson Boulevard in Richland County. Investigators say Swindler’s father shot Swindler to prevent him from starting the fire.

Deputies say Swindler then fled the home and was later found at a relative’s house where he was detained by investigators and taken to a local hospital. No one else was hurt.

Sgt. Brittany Scott with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department says Swindler will be booked and charged with attempted arson among other charges.

While this is a traumatic experience for those involved, it could have been much worse as everyone ended up ok. Swindler may need some mental health counseling but do you think it is right for him to be charged with attempted arson? Should he be taken to a mental hospital or jail as he only tried to set fire to himself, it doesn’t seem like he wanted to hurt anyone else.
