A fast-moving fire at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Wainwright in Alberta killed four service members and sent 39 people to hospitals, including 19 in critical condition, according to officials cited by BBC News (published 18 October 2026).

What sparked the blaze

The fire began around 16:00 local time (22:00 GMT) on a training range about 1km away from troops, Maj‑Gen Wade Rutland, Commander of 1st Canadian Division, said, per BBC reporting. He described “uncommonly strong winds” that “caused it to spread rapidly” toward soldiers in exercises. “Within 30 seconds to a minute they saw no fire, and then there was a fire right on top of them,” Rutland said. “It is not normal for a fire to move a kilometre in 30 to 60 seconds.”

The cause of the initial fire remains under investigation, the Canadian defence ministry said, according to the BBC. The ministry added that “at this time, there are no indications that it was the result of any terrorist activity.” After early local media reports suggested a gas main might have been struck during live fire, the military later said investigators do not believe any explosions were caused by oil or gas infrastructure, the BBC reported.

Casualties and emergency response

Officials identified the deceased as Sgt Morgan Wong, Pte Shaun Farrell, Pte Aidan Goulding and Pte Hayden Lykkemark, per the BBC. Alberta’s health service said the emergency response lasted about 10 hours and involved 22 ambulances and eight aircraft, according to the outlet. Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton declared a code orange for a high‑casualty incident on Saturday evening and stood it down Sunday afternoon.

A doctor told Canada’s public broadcaster CBC that the hospital was “completely overwhelmed” by patient numbers, according to BBC reporting. A witness at nearby Wainwright Health Centre described seeing burn victims and one person whose clothes were “blown off,” the BBC reported.

Leaders’ statements

Prime Minister Mark Carney called the blaze “violent” and “fast‑moving,” praising military and civilian crews who “fought this fire throughout the night in some of the worst conditions imaginable,” per the BBC. Minister of National Defence David McGuinty said, “Albertans are lining up to give blood,” according to the same report.

Where it happened

CFB Wainwright sits in rural eastern Alberta, roughly 120 miles (193km) from Edmonton and 180 miles (290km) from Calgary. It is one of the Canadian Army’s busiest training bases, and its airfield is also used by the Royal Canadian Air Force, the BBC noted.
