Robert Chardon, mayor of Venelles, has come up with what he says is the solution to all of France’s problems. He wants to ban all Muslims from the country. He wants them to pack up and then have them sent to Muslim countries, where they can do less harm.
Chardon is vice-president of the Organisation of Municipalities around Aix-en-Provence.
His right-leaning party, the Union for a Popular Movement, are now looking to expel him.
France has an estimated five million Muslims, according to recent statistics – making Islam the country’s second most popular religion.
Many Muslims have faced suspicion after Islamists murdered journalists at the Paris offices of satirical magazine Charlie Hedbo in January.
The country banned women from wearing burqa in public in 2010.
There are currently 5 million Muslims living in France and Chardon says that he expects all Muslims to be banned in France by 2027, but did not explain the reason he picked such an arbitrary date. He also didn’t explain how you could expel Muslims who may have lived in France for several generations and therefore could not be deported under normal circumstances.
One thing is for certain, he is about to receive some serious incoming flak over his proposal.
