Nassau County Deputy Eric Oliver died in the line of duty earlier today. Eric Oliver, 32, was a seven year veteran of the department.
Deputy Oliver was pursuing a suspect on foot at around 7:45 this morning, when he was fatally hit by a vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sheriff Lepper of Nassau County got choked up when he explained what happened. Lepper stated that Border Patrol agents were interviewing six people at a gas station on A1A near Chester Road.
Deputies were dispatched to the same gas station on an unrelated call, when they were requested to stay and assist the Border Patrol Agents.
One of the suspects took off on foot and Oliver and another deputy chased after him. The first officer made it, Oliver didn’t.
“He sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene” The suspect is still at large and is described as a Hispanic male wearing dark blue jeans. There is an active manhunt in the area and residents are urged to avoid the area.
Deputy Oliver leaves behind a wife and six year old daughter. Sheriff Lepper spoke with Deputy Oliver’s widow and said that Oliver, “died doing what he wanted to do. He dedicated his life to protecting the county. It is very tragic and very sad…He will certainly be missed.”
“Its a tragic day in the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office. We were thankful he was doing his job, and we were blessed to have him for the last seven years.”
RIP Deputy Oliver…
