Mother Arrested After Erratic Child Tests Positive For Methamphetamine

A Prairieville woman was arrested late Sunday night on counts of negligent injuring and cruelty to juveniles after she took her 2-year-old to a local hospital and the child was found to have eaten methamphetamine, said Sgt. Steven Nethken, of the Gonzales Police Department.

Tyler Dauzat, 21, 42553 La. 42, Prairieville, took her 2-year-old toddler, who was exhibiting extremely erratic behavior, to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Gonzales, where a blood screening of the child showed a significant presence of meth, Nethken said in a news release. Doctors concluded the child, who was stabilized and transferred to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, had eaten the drug.

Dauzat was at first uncooperative with doctors and Department of Children and Family Services employees about how the child came into contact with the meth, before admitting to Gonzales police investigators that she had the powder form of crystal meth in her purse, and her child, just before the trip to the hospital, had been left alone with the purse in a room at a local hotel.

In addition to the counts of negligent injuring and cruelty to juveniles, Dauzat was booked into Ascension Parish jail on counts of illegal use of a controlled dangerous substance in the presence of a juvenile and improper supervision of a minor, Nethken said.

Bail had not yet been set on Monday afternoon.

The Department of Children and Family Services is involved regarding the custody of the 2-year-old and another child of Dauzat’s, a 4-year-old, the news release said.

The case continues under investigation, and additional charges may be coming, police said.
