Oh Please: University Makes Trayvon Martin a Rocket Scientist

Florida Memorial University will present a bachelor’s of aeronautical science to the memory of Trayvon Martin which will be presented to his parents Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin.  The historically black university did something for Martin he could never have done for himself.  Martin died in 2012 after he was shot by community watchman George Zimmerman.

“The University will confer upon TRAYVON MARTIN a posthumous degree in Aeronautical Science with a concentration in Flight Education, in honor of the steps he took during his young life toward becoming a pilot,” the school’s statement read.

Martin wanted to become a pilot or learn how to fly planes, the Tampa Bay Times reported earlier.

“As we approach 50 years in Miami Gardens, this commencement holds a special place in all of our hearts…Of special significance is awarding posthumously the Bachelor of Science Degree in Aviation to Trayvon Martin,” Dr. Roslyn Clark Artis, president of Florida Memorial University, said in a statement.

The school plans to host a fundraiser for its Department of Aviation and Safety and for The Trayvon Martin Foundation after the ceremony.

Trayvon’s death and Zimmerman’s acquittal sparked the Black Lives Matter movement.

What’s next?  Baby Face Nelson an honorary degree in banking?  Jeffrey Dahmer a degree in culinary delights?  Hillary Clinton a degree in ethics?  Honorary degrees are fine for people who have made a contribution in a field they don’t have a degree in but why in the hell bestow it on someone who never achieved anything?
