You probably know Piers Morgan for his work on CNN, but until recently he was also the co-host of “Good Morning Britain”. However, he was recently the same as forced out of his job because he refused to apologize to Duchess of York Meghan Markle for not believing some of the things she said during her interview with Oprah Winfrey last month.
One thing that many people here across the pond don’t realize about Piers Morgan is that he has always been a fierce freedom of speech advocate. During an interview with Tucker Carlson, he told him that his gut instinct indicated to him that he should stay strong in the face of pressure from the United Kingdom government, the Duchess of York, and his bosses regarding his opinion. Television is heavily regulated in the United Kingdom, so Morgan has always been a bit of a black sheep anyway.
The Details of Piers Morgan’s Position
“They basically backed me into a corner, backed me into a position where I was told that I could either apologize for disbelieving Meghan Markle’s account of the events, or my position would be untenable and I would basically be let go,” Morgan said. “Throughout all of it, my gut feeling was, ‘I am going to be damned (sic) if I am going to have to apologize for something that I truly believe.’ That was a road I just wasn’t willing to go down. There are too many people who have been bullied by the woke brigade into apologizing just for expressing their opinion.”
Morgan also noted several examples, including one glaring example where Sharon Osbourne “was bullied into having to apologize just for defending me, all the while using some disgusting slurs in the process, and then she ended up losing her job anyway.” Another example he cited was that of Alexi McCammond, who was forced to give up her Teen Vogue position after some offensive tweets of her surfaced that dated all the way back to when she was a teenager. Yes, McCammond apologized, but in this culture, “that isn’t enough, because apologies will not get you anywhere.”
Morgan also described his own plight as well. “I was under attack from Miss Markle. If I didn’t adhere to her version of events, then I must be a callous racist. I must be condemned, and I must lose my job, as I found out later that day. Either way, it is a journalist’s job to express skepticism.”
He went on. “Even Oprah Winfrey said, ‘this is your truth’ during that interview. We heard liberals attacking [former President] Donald Trump for reinventing facts and for creating his own truth. However, when Meghan Markle is accused of doing it, the same liberals will show their bias and call you a racist.”
Finally, Piers Morgan said that the cancel culture he fell victim isn’t likely to end anytime soon. He said that the only way it will stop is when people will stand up and say, “enough’s enough.”
“We must realize that freedom of speech should be about being able to listen to an opinion that is outrageous to you and simply just accepting that someone doesn’t feel the same way as you. That’s what free speech should be.”
