She lived with her grandparents since her own parents were employed a long distance away. The village she lived in was near the city of Zhoukou, Henan Province which is in central China.
It was her father, 36-year-old Cai Liang, who first noticed something shocking had occurred with his daughter. He visited her during the Chinese New Year and couldn’t believe his eyes. His daughter’s body had transformed from thin and healthy to a deliberately frail and skinny physique.
“I wanted to make sure she got some good meals but then I realized she was being sick after each meal, and my parents told me it was often a problem,” Liang said.
