The World’s Richest Man Is Getting Divorced, And The Comment He Made About His Wife Is Going Viral

When Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and his wife, novelist MacKenzie Bezos, announced their divorce in a joint statement, Jeff’s tweet on the matter went viral. Most notably because, despite the sad news, he shared there were no regrets about their long relationship coming to an end: “If we had known we would separate after 25 years, we would do it all again.”

Bezos wrote: “We want to make people aware of a development in our lives. As our family and close friends know, after a long period of loving exploration and trial separation, we have decided to divorce and continue our shared lives as friends. We feel incredibly lucky to have found each other and deeply grateful for every one of the years we have been married to each other. If we had known we would separate after 25 years, we would do it all again.”

He continued: “We’ve had such a great life together as a married couple, and we also see wonderful futures ahead, as parents, friends, partners in ventures and projects, and as individuals pursuing ventures and adventures. Though the labels might be different, we remain a family, and we remain cherished friends.”

Bezos is worth close to $140 billion and the couple reportedly did not sign a prenuptial agreement, according to TMZ. Given that information, many found the wording of their statement interesting, as, lacking a prenup, MacKenzie would be entitled to half of Bezos’ estimated $137 billion net worth.

MacKenzie studied at Princeton, as did Jeff, though they never crossed paths at the university, graduating six years apart. She met Jeff when they both worked at investment management firm DE Shaw where he was a vice-president and she was a research assistant.

He actually interviewed her and they made an immediate connection. She asked him out to lunch — and three months later they were engaged. Three months after that, they were married. MacKenzie and Jeff have four children together —three sons and a daughter.

Toby Yerburgh, Partner and Head of Family at Collyer Bristow LLP, explained how their statement was incredibly positive, telling “Not since the ‘conscious uncoupling’ statement of Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin have a high profile couple released such a positive and upbeat statement announcing their divorce as the one released today by Jeff Bezos and his wife.”

Yerburgh added: “Such agreed statements often form part of the negotiations over a financial split and come attached to an NDA. They demonstrate the importance of high profile divorcing couples’ lawyers working hand in glove with their PR agents.”

Jeff founded Amazon, which he started from a garage in Seattle in 1994. During an event in April, Jeff spoke about how MacKenzie’s support was instrumental when he founded the company (she also did accounting for Amazon during its first year).

He remarked during the event: “When you have loving and supportive people in your life, like MacKenzie, my parents, my grandfather, my grandmother, you end up being able to take risks.”

Now that they’ve split, many are left wondering how their divorce settlement will play out.
