Two engineering students, a boy and a girl were stripped and brutally murdered. The bodies were found at a desolate spot between Bhushi dam and INS Shivaji, a training naval station, in Lonavla.
Initially, the police suspected that they had committed suicide, but the extent of injuries and the state in which the bodies were found prompted them to consider the murder angle.
The bodies of the students were completely stripped with multiple injury marks. The a bsence of the student’s mobile phone raised suspicion that they were victim of violent robbery. They also said that the girl’s hands had been tied behind her back and a cloth had been stuffed into her mouth.
The police believe that the incident took place probably between 7.30pm on Sunday and 2pm on Monday.
The victims were identified, on the basis of their college identity cards, as Sarthak Waghchore (24), hailing from Rahuri, Ahmednagar district, and his girlfriend, Shruti Sanjay Dumbre (22), of Otur in Junnar taluk, Pune district. The boy was a final-year mechanical engineering student whereas the girl was a final-year computer engineering student.
A cousin of Dumbre said, “The family was informed of it around 7 pm. We were told by the police that she committed suicide with her boyfriend, but we knew about their relationship and had no problem with it.” Chandrakant Jadhav, senior inspector of Lonavla City police station, said the dog squad had been pressed into service in the search for clues. The police said they are also looking into other angles.
Lonavla City police sources said two persons have been detained in the case.
