A veterans group got plenty of play in the mainstream media by calling Donald Trump a “cheap fraud” over his donations to veterans. The media covered it as if the group were a fair and unbiased source of information.
However, documents uncovered by the OpenSecrets Blog have cast some doubt on another group of donations — namely, the donations made by VoteVets Action Fund, the group that has been attacking Trump.
According to their report released Monday, VoteVets Action Fund is one of the most active leftist groups in America, having used almost all of their funds in 2014 to try and get out the vote for the Democrats.
“Fueled largely by social welfare organizations aligned with Democrats and millions of dollars given by unions, VoteVets — with just two employees and no volunteers — has spent more on elections since its founding in 2006 than the combined spending of much more prominent politically active groups on the left, like NARAL Pro-Choice America and the Sierra Club, according to reports filed with the Federal Election Commission,” OpenSecrets reported.
Organizations like VoteVets — which are supposed to be dedicated to “social welfare” — aren’t supposed to be political or partisan in nature.
However, OpenSecrets noted, “neither the IRS nor the FEC has shown an appetite for policing them.
