In what can only be described world altering, the military has overthrown the Erdogan government. Reports say that Erdogan is safe and that Turkey’s top military commander, General Hulusi Akar, has been taken prisoner as well as other top military allies of President Erdogan. Reports of aircraft flying over the city of Ankara and gun shots are heard throughout the city. All social media is being blocked and the airport in Ankara is closed.
A statement by coup leaders reads as follows:
“Turkish Armed Forces have completely taken over the administration of the country to reinstate constitutional order, human rights and freedoms, the rule of law and general security that was damaged.
“All international agreements are still valid. We hope that all of our good relationships with all countries will continue.”
The coup was timed to coincide with the vacation of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan outside of the country. Erdogan plans to make a statement soon from his location in hiding.
The government has issued a statement calling the coup an attack on democracy:
“This is an attack against Turkish democracy. A group within the armed forces has made an attempt to overthrow the democratically elected government outside the chain of command.
“The statement made on behalf of the Armed Forces wasn’t authorised by the military command. We urge the world to stand in solidarity with the Turkish people.”
The military has taken over the television station.
