In what appears to be an attempt to either further divide the country or create more “Fake News” many publications including the Washington Times are reporting a story that says a memo reveals that Mr. Trump is considering mobilizing National Guard troops to round up illegals. The memo was supposedly issued as part of the initial action that was taken to implement a temporary closing of the border just after his election.
According to the memo, which was allegedly addressed to the Department of Homeland Security, the administration is considering a mobilization of as many as 100,000 National Guard troops to round up illegal immigrants, especially the millions living nowhere near the Mexico border. Sources say the memo was originally acquired in draft form by The Associated Press.
The AP says the document calls for the military to assist in the implementation of immigration enforcement as far north as Portland, Oregon, and as far east as New Orleans, Louisiana. In addition to the four states that border Mexico also included are all states that are contiguous to them. The memo is supposed to have been written by U.S. Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly, a retired four-star Marine general.
National Guard personnel have been used in the past under presidents Bush, Truman and Eisenhower to assist with immigration-related missions on the U.S.-Mexico border, but this would be the first time they have used as far north or been given such an all encompassing mission.
The Washington Times has reported that the document has been circulating in DHS over the last two weeks. If it is activated, it could have far reaching repercussions. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that almost 6 million people residing in the U.S. without authorization live in the eleven targeted states, a number confirmed by the Pew Research Center based on 2014 Census data.
But having said all that, it appears that the whole story is either another attempt by Left wing writers to make up a good story or misinformation leaked by Obama supporters to create more disruptions in the country. There have been several attempts by media outlets to contact the DHS for a comment on this statement, but they have declined to respond to all inquiries. In addition, the final nail seems to have been driven into it coffin today when Presidential Press Spokesman Sean Spicer was asked at a press briefing about the memo.
Spicer’s response was a very direct:
“That is 100 percent not true. It is false. It is irresponsible to be saying this. There is no effort at all to round up, to utilize the National Guard to round up illegal immigrants,” he said, before admonishing the media. “I wish you guys had asked before you tweeted,” he added. But Spicer did say admit; “I don’t know what could potentially be out there, but I know that there is no effort to do what is potentially suggested. It is not a White House document,” he said.
