A Minneapolis café that rebranded as “Post Modern Times” after protests over U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is set to close at year’s end, according to an Oct. 17 announcement attributed to owner Dylan Alverson and reported by the Western Journal.
From anti-ICE stand to donation-only
The Western Journal reported the restaurant, formerly “Modern Times,” rebranded after the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti during confrontations with ICE agents. In a Jan. 26 social media post, Alverson wrote: “Effective tomorrow we are done making money for the fascists that occupy our city… we will function as a free and donation based restaurant, Post Modern Times. Everyone is welcome EXCEPT ICE,” according to the outlet’s account of the post.
Losses and long waits reported
The Western Journal, citing The New York Times, said the café recorded $1.3 million in sales in 2025 but still ended with an $18,500 deficit. The Western Journal also stated that employees left and wait times reached two hours.
Prices returned, free meals pledged—closure still followed
According to Alpha News, Alverson later reinstated menu prices, eliminated tips, and promised 25 free meals a day. Alpha News also reported on Oct. 24, 2026, that the restaurant was closing permanently.
Owner’s closing statement
In the Oct. 17 message reported by the Western Journal, Alverson said, “I’ve exhausted every option without compromising the core fundamentals that make Modern Times what it is. Because of this, we have made the choice to close at the end of the year.”
