LeBron James of the World Champion Cavaliers is boycotting staying at Donald Trump Soho hotel in New York. America knows he backed presidential loser Hillary Clinton, but he opted for the politically unsmart move of not spending a couple nights at the Trump hotel in lower Manhattan this week, according to ESPN. Is King James being a sore loser because he cannot handle Hillary’s Electoral College commanding 306/ 232 defeat by President-Elect Trump or should he put on his big boy pants and stick to basket ball?
Ordinarily most basketball fans would not care where their favorite basketball stars stay but the World Champion LeBron is a superstar among superstars of the game. He like Reggie Jackson of the Yankees, is the stick that stirs the world champion team drink. Well it appears the Trumpian victory is a little too soon for what LeBron is capable of handling.
But the more important point is what exact message is LeBron trying to send his fans and the young people that follow him and his team? Being an adult about loss and how one takes it speaks volumes about what manner of person he and his fellow teammates who followed his lead are. Should Trump supporters who live in the Cleveland area boycott his team when he plays in the city?
Maybe LeBron did not consider that thousands of the fans that field the basketball arena are followers of Trump. Maybe he is so above the average hard working wage earner that loves the Cavaliers and simply wanted to Make America Great Again and did not fit into the basketball great’s narrow definition of a Trump voter. Perhaps Lebron skipped economics class in high school and does not realize if you lose fan base and fan dollars your team’s bottom line suffers.
ESPN reported that since Election Day there were several Cavalier players who expressed their disappointment over the results. Of course, it might be clear to most Americans who actually stayed in their civics or government classes that the Electoral College determines presidential winners and losers.
Fuming over a presidential loss should be history. Trump won and Hillary skidded off the political runway. One can be nearly certain that if asked, most of these players including LeBron probably could not tell anyone of one single policy, program or achievement of Hillary Clinton that made a difference in the lives of the poor, minority or Clevelanders that they allegedly care so much about?
One Cavalier player even took his personal political angst one step further by insisting that the Cavs’ trip to the nation’s capital to celebrate their championship with President Barack Obama would make them the “last team to visit the White House,” according to ESPN. So, this basketball player turned soothsayer has the formally unknown ability to predict that other basketball world champion teams will be spoiled crybabies about this presidential election win and avoid the Trump White House. One can safely assume that that scenario is not going to happen.
As for LeBron and his cohorts, perhaps King Kames newest best political bud Hillary can put them up at her home in Chappaqua, New York. It is rumored to have a safe place, completely outfitted with Play-Doh, etch-a-sketch, comfy blankets and any other tools for grown toddlers that these pouty players might need.
