House Democrats are trying to hold a figurative gun to the heads of Republicans in an attempt to force votes on gun control measures.
The collective Democrat temper tantrum, dubbed a “sit-on,” began on Wednesday. It’s now in its second day. GOP leaders abruptly adjourned the House a day early Thursday morning as the House floor devolved into chaos. Via Vice News:
Democrats from the House of Representatives entered the second day of an unprecedented sit-in on Thursday, continuing a marathon protest over the failure to pass legislation designed to curtail gun violence in the wake of the Orlando mass shooting.
The group, led by Rep. John Lewis, has occupied the lower chamber for more than 20 hours (as of this writing). At around 7am on Thursday, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi vowed that Democrats would continue the sit-in until House Speaker Paul Ryan announced a vote on the gun-control measures, including an amendment which would prevent people on the controversial no-fly list from purchasing firearms. …
By evening, at least 168 House Democrats and 34 Senate Democrats had joined the sit-in, while protesters gathered outside the building in solidarity.
A member of the Sit-In Supremes, Rep. Elizabeth Etsy (D-CT), tweeted this stroke of brilliance:
Elizabeth Esty @RepEsty 22h22 hours ago
Joining w/ @repjohnlewis &dozens of my colleagues for House sit-in for a vote to prevent gun violence #NoBillNoBreak
Not to be outdone, Sen. Elizabeth Pocahontas Warren tweeted:
Nowhere I’d rather spend my bday than the House floor w/ @repjohnlewis for gun control. #NoBillNoBreak #goodtrouble
House Democrats are demanding a vote on legislation similar to proposals the Senate shot down early in the week. This included expanded background checks and “no fly, no buy” legislation barring people on the federal terrorist watch list from buying firearms. Last week, Democrats walked out on House Speaker Paul Ryan’s moment of silence for the victims of the Orlando shooting.
Someone needs a mommy very badly.
An amendment which would expand the FBI’s online surveillance abilities also crashed and burned in the Senate on Wednesday. The amendment would have given federal authorities access to citizens’ browsing histories and email metadata without a warrant.
Can you say “Fourth Amendment” violation? Not that anyone’s counting.
Your average fifth grader can tell you that the issue related to terrorist attacks is terrorists, not guns, and that at least some of the violence in Orlando may have been stopped had an armed citizen or two returned fire when Omar Mateen opened up. But Democrats can’t get their heads around the concept. So they huddled together on the House floor through Wednesday night. They remained there as Ryan officially adjourned the House at around 3:15am ET, until 5 July. By around 6:30am Thursday, about 16 Democrats remained, including Nancy Pelosi.
These poor folks don’t seem to know where they are. Apparently Democrats think they’re in the Student Union Building at Berkeley. Will someone kindly hand them a road map?
Speaking of road maps, a spokesperson for Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis) explained on Twitter: “The House can not operate without members following the rules of the institution, so the House has recessed subject to the call of the chair.”
So let me get this straight: House Dems ignore House rules/laws in order to force the House to pass more rules/laws.
Sweet.
Meanwhile, the more Nanny State DemoLibs move to restrict the rights of law-abiding Americans and infringe on the Second Amendment, the more gun sales spike.
So keep sittin’ in, Dems. Keep showing us just how out of touch you are with common sense America. And your average fifth grader. Some day we may finally see an armed populace prepared to do what the Obama administration can’t or won’t: Take the safety and security of our families seriously.
Ta.
