[PHOTO] Ken Doll Dressed As Woman Causes Controversy For Cake Shop

SACRAMENTO, CA (KCRA/CNN) – The Freeport Bakery Kitchen stirred up some controversy on social media after pictures of a Ken doll cake showed up on Facebook.

The cake featured a Ken doll in a dress standing on top of it.

Facebook users left several comments on a post by bakery owner, Marlene Goetzeler. She said some people took this playful image and turned it into a real life LGBT debate.

“First I was shocked, then I was surprised and then I thought, well you can’t make everyone happy,” Goetzeler said.

The person, who bought the cake for a friend, never imagined that a sweet surprise would turn sour.

Customer Ashley Nelson came to pick a cake of her own and added another layer to this conversation.

“I don’t know, I feel that people should be free to be who they are without having to worry about what other people think and I think it’s awesome,” Nelson said.

Goetzler said the controversy has now generated a nationwide response, and some customers even stopped by to applaud the bakery.

“I’m really grateful that people have supported us and come out and shown their true colors so to speak,” Goetzler said.
