We received some answers when Abdelhamid Abaaoud claimed responsibility as the mastermind behind the attacks. Abdelhamid Abaaoud, the 27-year-old Belgian national who engineered the brutal terrorist attacks in Paris over the weekend, detailed his evasion of police capture in a February interview with “Dabiq,” a magazine used for ISIS propaganda.

Abaaoud identifies himself as Abu Umar al-Baljiki and outlines his escape in the magazine, which is translated to English in a PDF featuring graphic images, according to The Daily Beast.

Following the raid of an ISIS safe-house in Belgium earlier this year, Abaaoud claimed to have stopped by police while on the run:

“I was even stopped by an officer who contemplated me so as to compare me to the picture, but he let me go, as he did not see the resemblance! This was nothing but a gift from Allah.”
